Renters Beware! Landlord Does Not Return Security Deposit!

I rented this apartment during the summer of 2011. The landlord was inhospitable from the start. However, we had never imagined the length she would go through to keep the security deposit! Eventually, I took her to small claims court, where she gave many meritless explanations as to why she was withholding the deposit. I won and judgement was entered against her for the security deposit and fees. However, to date I still have not received any payments. My advice to prospective renters is simply to rent elsewhere. However, if you were unfortunate enough, as I was, to have already rented from this landlord, I would advise that you take her to court also. I believe there is a two-year statute of limitations on landlord/tenant matters (please check with an attorney to be sure). I have long suspected that this landlord has a history of poor landlord/tenant practices. Whether she ends up paying or not, winning a judgement against her in court will make her unscrupulous ways a matter of public record and ruin her credit for the long haul.
