Quality, timely work but expensive

Bill's was recommended to us by a local flooring company. The salesman there professed how great Bill's work is and at a reasonable price.
Bill and 2 employees came out to assess the work, give timelines, and start dates. A verbal quote of removing and refinishing the hardwood flooring was established with add-ons of staining, shoe baseboards and transitions if needed. As we see it, most of this job was labor as they removed carpet and refinished our existing hardwood floors. Removing an entry tile and blending new flooring to match the old. The only materials purchased were 2 boxes of wood flooring, stain, inexpensive shoe molding and sealer.
The work is completed. The employees were neat and on time. The work was well done BUT the price doubled in the actual invoice. There was no communication about material costs and everything was lumped together in the final price. We deduced it cost over $10 sq ft to resurface the 275 sq ft. Twice the price originally quoted.
